As the month of September comes to a close, so does the second quarter of the Chase Freedom 5% cashback promotion. This means one thing. Chase Freedom Quarter 3 is beginning!
Join Our Basic Travel Facebook Group to Stay in the Loop on the Latest Travel & Finance News!
To recap, the second quarter provided 5% on purchases at Grocery Stores and Home Improvement Stores. You could maximize this promotion on purchases up to $1,500 in total. This actually equals a bonus of 7,500 points or $75 cashback.
Chase Ultimate Rewards Transfers
If you are a full-fledged basic traveler, you know that as a Chase Sapphire cardholder, you can transfer those points for even more value! You can also check out our Basic Guide to Chase Freedom Quarterly Challenges for more information on how this works!

Hopefully, you were able to maximize quarter three because quarter four will be here before you know it.
For 2019 The Chase Freedom Quarter categories include:
- 1st Quarter: Gas Stations, Tolls, Drugstores
- 2nd Quarter: Grocery Stores & Home Improvement Stores
- 3rd Quarter: Gas Stations and Select Streaming Services
- 4th Quarter: Holiday Bonuses to be announced on September 15th!

Chase Freedom Quarter 3 Promotion
As of today; Chase is allowing Freedom customers to opt into the quarter 3 promotion. You can opt-in with one click via a targeted email or by logging into your Chase online banking account. The deadline to opt in to this promotion is September 14th, 2019.
I like the Quarter 3 promotion. Mostly because I don’t have to go out of my way to meet the $1,500 spend. We have two vehicles in our house that accrue a decent amount of mileage each week.
For streaming services, we already get Netflix for free through T-Mobile. Hulu is also for free through Spotify so that category isn’t applicable to us.
Chase FAQ’s
You can always check out Chase’s FAQ on what is included in meeting some of these bonuses. For Gas Stations & Streaming services, it is noted below.

I’d imagine that if you were in a pinch for meeting the quarter 3 spend, you could prepay those services to help max out the $1,500.
You could also test out if purchases in a gas station would count towards the $75 for 5x spending. I recently spent $25 inside a Red Apple as a test to see if it would qualify as 5x. It looks like it worked!
Remember, your results may vary. This might not work for every location. However, I definitely suggest testing it out first before you try to max out the spending.

Happy points earning from the Basic Travel Couple!
