Over the last few weeks, we have seen program updates pretty regularly from our Airline and Hotel Industry. This morning, I received an email from IHG witch included information on some recent changes that they have just made to their program and policies. I’m glad that IHG came through with their own changes as we had already seen status extensions from Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriot. Personally, I’m a big fan of the IHG portfolio, especially the fantastic Kimpton Properties. Based on this recent update, my IHG Spire Elite Status will be extended & more!

Status Extension

IHG has extended Elite Status for all Rewards Clubs Members through January 2022. Interestingly, IHG also has included the Choice Benefit. For me, as a Spire Elite I can choose between 25,000 Bonus Points or Gifting Platinum Elite Status. I’ll certainly be choosing those bonus points to add to my stash of IHG Points from the 140,000 Credit Card Signup Bonus. All changes should be reflected within the next few weeks!

Reduced Criteria to Earn Elite Status

IHG has lowered the number of points and nights required to earn an Elite Status for the remainder of 2020. All points and nights have been reduced by 25%!

Points Expiration

Now IHG is unique when compared to the other hotel brands in that their elite rewards members are exempt from the points expiration policy. If you have any IHG Rewards Club Elite Status, you don’t have to worry about losing points from account inactivity!

For IHG Club Members who currently do not have elite status, the policy has been paused through December 31st 2020. Typically, points that are not used within 12 months will expire.

InterContinental Ambassador

All ambassadors will receive a three month extension which started on March 15th 2020! These members will also receive a three month extension on all unredeemed weekend night certificates.

IHG Credit Card Hotel Certificates

All IHG Hotel Certificates that have been earned from a co-branded credit card have been extended. For certificates that were set to expire on and after March 1st can be redeemed through December 31st 2020. All certificates that have been issued in 2020 will be extended for an additional 6 months beyond the expiration date in 2021.

Community Support

I was glad to see in the update that IHG has been opening it’s hotels and offering free rooms to covid-19 first responders. In addition they have been helping local foodbanks through donations and assisting with deliveries! These initiatives are in line with the Nationwide #FirstRespondersFirst Program!

Basic Breakdown

I really like the changes that IHG released and am excited to take advantage of my Spire Elite Status extension next year! As of now, my most memorable stay in 2020 has been at the Kimpton Seafire in Grand Cayman Island. That resort is absoltuley beautiful! It was also a fantastic Points Redemption saving us a few thousand dollars!
