JetBlue just announced that they are offering a change in fare pricing! In addition to their Blue and Blue Plus fares, they are also introducing Blue Basic and Blue Extra. These new fares will provide different fares for each class depending on what their customers are looking for. Blue Basic could be compared to any other Low-Cost carriers that allow for the cheapest prices but no modifications. Blue Extra is for those who need flexibility and speed.
JetBlue is known for the most legroom in coach, free brand-name snacks and drinks, free high-speed wi-fi, and even DIRECTV and movies at every seat! No matter which fare you decide to book, you will still enjoy the JetBlue experience.
Now onto the JetBlue Credit Card.
JetBlue Plus Mastercard
If you have the JetBlue Plus card, there are a few slight changes to your points earnings. The biggest one being when you book Blue Basic with your JetBlue Plus Card, you only get 1 point per dollar spent on JetBlue flights versus the 3 points per dollar.
The below chart is courtesy of JetBlue, which details the new fare type differences.
This new fare seems to be competing with the ultra-low-cost-carries and basic economy fares. Some differences that Blue Basic provides is you can still choose your seat for free during the check-in process up to 24 hours prior to departure. You could also pay a small fee prior to check-in. You can still earn TrueBlue points, although it will be at a slower rate.
What this means for you
If you are looking for low-cost flights, then this new Blue Basic Fare gives you everything you need. Not only is it low cost, but it also includes many perks that most low-cost carriers don’t have- like free WiFi and DIRECTV in each seatback. You even can have unlimited drinks and snacks, unlike certain low-cost carriers who do not provide any complimentary food or drinks on board. Now that you have the option to book ‘basic’ competitive fares with other low-cost carriers, I thin this gives JetBlue a huge advantage in the marketplace.
